Vladimir Vernadsky was a Russian, Ukrainian, and Soviet mineralogist and geochemist who founded the fields of geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and radiogeology. His 1926 book The Biosphere popularized the concept of the biosphere and its role in shaping the Earth. Vernadsky was a prominent figure in the scientific community, serving as the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and receiving the Stalin Prize in 1943.
